Endurance

I am far from being an endurande runner - yet. But this is what truly inspires me and this guy just did something amazing. I get inspired by art, design, fashion, music, food and wine. But I also get inspired by people really, really pushing the limits of our own limitations.

Yup

“Social media helps small companies look bigger and helps big companies get smaller. Meaning, a small company can have a big presence online with customers through using social media. Conversely, a big company can get ‘smaller’ because social media connects companies to customers on a very personal level.” - John Moore

3,339 texts per month

OMGWTF

Just need to quote an article from Mashable:
"According to a new study from Nielsen, our society has gone mad with texting, data usage and app downloads. Nielsen analyzed the mobile data habits of over 60,000 mobile subscribers and surveyed over 3,000 teens during April, May and June of this year. The numbers they came up with are astounding.

The number of texts being sent is on the rise, especially among teenagers age 13 to 17. According to Nielsen, the average teenager now sends 3,339 texts per month. There’s more, though: teen females send an incredible 4,050 text per month, while teen males send an average of 2,539 texts. "

Although these are US figures it significative for young people all over the world. The most interesting stats for us Comms professionals is that 49% of the respondents use mobile internet. That means a real change in habits, perhaps due to the decrease in costs of surfing on your mobile device.

Size Matters!

Or does it? At least when we talk about ROI in Social Media. To quote Jay Baer in Social Media Today "The larger the brand, the more likely they are to use social media without concerning themselves with its dollar ROI, when goodwill for them, is priceless. With mid-level brands the debate becomes more acute because the marketing budget is more thinly spread. And as for small brands, there’s no debate at all."

I mostly agree, although small companies have so many free tools available on the market. But then, ROI is correctly about metrics, facts and figures related to sales. But what about companies who just want to build their brand online? How do you measure the value of relationships? Some people talk about ROE (Return Of Engagement) but I cannot really see how this can be truly measured unless you do over priced qualitative surveys.

No, the only TRUE way of brand building success in social platforms is to be engaged on a personal level, where you can feel the brand position. Where you (the CMO, etc) are truly part of the conversation making friends. This also means that you quickly will feel when something's wrong, intuitively.

All relationships goes through ups and downs and the aim must always be to maintain a healthy balance between giving and taking. And this is not supposed to be measured.

The Nobel Prize Commitee to be sued?

Apparently, Nassim Nicholas Taleb (more info here: http://www.fooledbyrandomness.com/), wants to sue the Nobel Prize Commitee because they gave the prize to Harry Markowitz, Merton Miller and William Sharpe in 1990.

The 'Sharpe-theory', Taleb argues, is one of the main reasons the world has seen such a financial meltdown. And since the Nobel Prize Commitee has awarded this theory they should be held responsible for the financial loss that a lot of people have experienced in the last couple of years.

I don't know whether Taleb will actually go ahead with this, or whether it's just another way of getting free publicity, but he has really interesting thoughts about economic trade and financial systems that are highly critical of how the market functions right know. More info about his Black Swan Theory you can find here: http://www.fooledbyrandomness.com/tenprinciples.pdf.

The story continues...

The GAP recently launched a new logo and then deciding to pull the logo after "internet backlash" (see - http://www.mediabistro.com/unbeige/gap-decides-to-fight-logo-hatred-with-possible-spec-based-solution-internet-prepares-for-imminent-explosion_b9210).

And here is a rather funny comment about it all:

Why launch a new logo when GAP is one of the most successful and recognized fashion/clothing brands in the world? With recognition comes fame and trust and more business. With a new logo (which is more software company than lifestyle) the market and consumers get confused and any sign of weakness from GAP will affect the sales figures. But then, a staggering 90% of the customers didn't even know or understood that GAP had changed the logo - the crisis seems to have stopped in the design community.

Well, another much discussed logo change is that of MySpace. Much more appreciated by the design community and hopefully also the users of the community. The idea is that everyone can adapt the logo to their own wishes.
